The 1980 men’s soccer team, led by Hall of Fame coach Tim Schum, is the second team enshrined in the Hall of Fame. The team advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals — the deepest run any Binghamton team ever made in a national tournament. Along the way the Colonials captured the SUNYAC Championship and then became the first SUNY soccer team to advance beyond the NCAA New York regional.
Despite a formidable schedule peppered with four Division I opponents and elite regional rivals Cortland and Ithaca, Binghamton strung together a six-game midseason unbeaten streak that put the squad in position to challenge for the SUNYAC title. After going 3-0-2 to win the SUNYAC East, Binghamton blanked host Buffalo State 2-0 to win its first
SUNYAC title since 1974.
Ranked No. 10 in the nation heading into the NCAA tournament, the Colonials hosted Clarkson with the visitors jumping out to a 2-0 first half lead. Binghamton then rattled off three straight goals only to see Clarkson force overtime with a last minute tally. In sudden death, Co-captain Mike Doherty scored the winner with 4:42 left in the second extra period to seal a wild 4-3 win.
One week later, Doherty again delivered a dramatic gamewinner — this time in the 24th minute of overtime — to give the Colonials a 1-0 win over Ithaca in an epic battle between the top two teams in the state. An estimated 300 visiting fans from Binghamton mobbed the field in celebration. Keeper Paul Quinlan was brilliant with 11 saves, including several pointblank
stops late in the game.
The Colonials then met defending NCAA champion Babson in the quarterfinals in Boston and their historic season ended with a 2-1 loss — just one win shy of the NCAA Final Four. With an 11-5-2 record, Binghamton was slotted at No. 5 in the final national rankings. The team was particularly clutch in overtime, owning a 4-0-2 mark. Five players earned allconference recognition: Doherty, Nate Giorgio, Bob Howard, Jordan Sherman and Bob Surash with Doherty doubling as a first-team All-State selection (Div. I and III).
