The 1992-93 golf team, led by Hall of Fame coach John Affleck, capped an exceptional year with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship — the second-highest national finish of any men's team in school history.

The Colonials produced a stunning win percentage of 97 percent (200-7) against the field in 14 events spanning the fall and spring. Six different players led the team in tournament scoring throughout the year, demonstrating the collective talent of the group, which included seniors Eric Coultoff, Michael Feldman, Chris Sladish, juniors Dave Andrews and Jake Sladish, sophomore Greg Marris and freshmen John Binkley, Chad Houseknecht and Tim Rose.

In the fall, the team won seven of nine tournaments and earned a No. 2 national ranking. The team also placed third out of 34 teams at the Division I Yale Invitational and was runnerup at the all-division ECAC Championship. In the spring, Binghamton won two more invitationals to lock in its second straight national championship berth.

With designs on competing for an NCAA title, the team headed west to Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, Calif. for the 72-hole championship. But in the opening round, All-American Jake Sladish aggravated a back injury and had to withdraw after 18 holes. Binghamton became the only school in the 22-team field that not only didn't have its No. 1 golfer but also didn't have the luxury of dropping its worst score each round. The team's four remaining players responded under great pressure to shoot final rounds of 305-303-302 and fend off the field to win an NCAA trophy.

Chris Sladish tied for fifth place among 120 golfers and earned first team All-America honors. Andrews placed 12th to join Sladish as an All-Amercan. Houseknecht (25th place) and Rose (final-round 75) showed their mettle in their NCAA debuts. The team's second straight top-7 NCAA finish established Binghamton as one of the premier golf programs in the nation.
