The 1994-95 men's tennis team, led by Hall of Fame coach Michael Starke, achieved distinction by earning the program's first NCAA tournament berth when it was one of just 12 chosen across the country to compete for the national title.
The team began the fall without senior standouts Andrew Magidoff and Pavel Shklyar, who were studying abroad. But a tournament title at the Rochester Classic keyed a run of 13 straight victories with senior Doanh Wang providing crucial leadership in the shorthanded lineup. The fall season ended at the Rolex Northeast Regional, where junior Ron Sussman reached the singles final.
With Magidoff and Shklyar back in the spring, BU had a formidable lineup. Magidoff and freshman phenom Adam Marcus gave BU a 1-2 punch of NCAA entries at the top, followed by Sussman, Dave Rosenthal, Wang and Shklyar. Doubles tandems featured Magidoff and Shklyar at No. 1 and Marcus and Rosenthal at No. 2 — with both pairs headed toward NCAA berths. Sussman and Wang lost just twice together at No. 3. The deep roster also included junior Marc Appel, sophomores Jason Cohen, Arthur Gershfeld and Jamie Shutter, along with freshmen Arish Dalal, Junji Nakamura and Scott Soussa.
Midway through the spring, BU was ranked No. 3 in the East Region, with only the top two teams earning spots to the NCAA Championship. But a resounding 7-0 win over No. 2 Swarthmore locked up the unprecedented national berth.
Now 16-2 and ranked No. 11 in the country, BU headed to Kalamazoo, Mich. for the 12-team NCAA Championship. There, the team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 5 Trinity, ending its title run one match short of the quarterfinals. A subsequent 6-1 win over University of the South gave BU its record-tying 17th dual match victory and a final ITA ranking of No. 10.
Magidoff and Marcus went on to earn All-America honors in singles and Magidoff and Shklyar reaped All-America doubles accolades. Magidoff was the East Region Senior Player of the Year, Marcus the region's top rookie and Starke its top coach.
