Led by fourth-year head coach Sheryl Sousa, the 1995 volleyball team produced a record-setting season that culminated with the program's first conference and state titles, first NCAA tournament berth and highest win percentage in school history (40-9, 82%).
After splitting four matches at the early-season Colorado College tournament, Binghamton hit its stride with a school-record 18-match win streak — a stretch that included a pivotal 3-1 victory over Cortland, thanks to a 15-2 third-set trouncing. That lopsided set paved the way for the Colonials' tiebreak advantage over Cortland and brought the SUNYAC Championship to the West Gym for the first time.
Binghamton overcame Geneseo in a grueling semifinal, setting up a title-match tilt with 12th-ranked Cortland. The Colonials prevailed in a riveting two-and-a-half hour match, 10-15, 15-13, 17-15, 11-15, 15-10. Leading the charge were All-Tournament selections Marnie Andrews, Lauren Caiaccia, Colleen Cashman and Dawn Kenyon.
One week later, the Colonials captured their first New York State Championship with three straight wins, including a 3-2 upset victory over top-seeded Rochester in the championship match. Binghamton dropped the first two sets before storming back to win.
Now fully entrenched in the region's top-4, Binghamton earned program's first NCAA tournament berth. In the first round of the 32-team draw, the team saw its record-setting season close with a 3-0 loss to two-time reigning NCAA semifinalist Ithaca.
Sousa was named SUNYAC, New York State and AVCA East Region Coach of the Year. Cashman was named all-region and both Caiaccia and Andrews were named All-SUNYAC.
In addition to the three honorees, the roster also consisted of assistant coach Sue Edwards, seniors Dawn Kenyon and Marina Khvatyuk, juniors Michelle Kim, Lydia Tshulos and Nicole Canestrare, sophomore Joyce Tavoulareas and freshmen Jen Mancuso, Linda Yee, Angela Sullivan, Lauren O'Neill and Leigh Houghton. Student manager Brian Lewis and student trainers Juliann Frese and Zoriana Zobniw provided key support.
