A native of Rhodes, Greece, Hristos Dimitriou served the athletics department for 20 years in multiple capacities, most prominently as head men's and head women's soccer coach.

Dimitriou began his coaching tenure with the women's club soccer team and coached for two seasons before leading the program to varsity status in 1985. Within three years, the program had a winning record and over his final two seasons, the team notched double-digit win totals and earned invitations to the ECAC Upstate New York Championship. His 1989 team went 11-5-3, twice tied eventual NCAA runnerup Ithaca and earned the program's first-ever national ranking (No. 18).

By the time Dimitriou moved over to the men's program in 1991, his women's team was ready to make history. That 1991 team won a school-record 14 games, was SUNYAC runnerup and received the program's first-ever NCAA tournament berth when it was one of just 16 teams selected across the nation.

Dimitriou served as associate head coach of the men's team for 1991 and 1992 before taking over as head coach in 1993. He coached for nine seasons, ushering the program from NCAA Division III to Division I status.

His first team in 1993 went 14-6-1 and hoisted the program's third ECAC postseason trophy. One year later, Dimitriou's team produced a 12-6-1 season that ended with a flurry of wins and an NCAA tournament berth. After a 1-4 start, the squad won 11 straight games, outscoring opponents 39-6 with seven shutouts. The team lost just once in 10 SUNYAC games and Dimitriou was named SUNYAC Coach of the Year.

During the divisional transition, Dimitriou's teams posted two double-digit seasons with postseason invitations as a Division II member. His 1998 team went 11-6-1 and advanced to the ECAC semifinals and the 1999 squad also achieved double-digit wins and a postseason berth.
