A native of Reading, Pa., Zachary Groh played baseball at Binghamton from 2004-08. He earned his bachelor's degree in sociology in 2008 and received his AAS degree in radiography at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences in 2015.
A dominant pitcher who graduated as the program's career strikeouts leader (296), Groh led the Bearcats to back-to-back
America East regular season titles in 2007 and 2008 and was a three-time first team all-conference selection.
As a freshman, he won four games and averaged 8.44 strikeouts per game, leading the team in its May playoff push. After his 2005 season was derailed by injury, Groh returned to the mound in 2006 and produced an exceptional season. He posted a miniscule 1.85 ERA, thanks to school records of 24 straight scoreless innings and 42 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. Heading into May, he led the entire nation in ERA before finishing with the 11th-best mark. Groh was selected as the America East Pitcher of the Year after limiting conference foes to five runs in 38.2 innings. He was a finalist for the Roger Clemens Award as the nation's top pitcher and was selected as the BU "Athlete of the Year."
In 2007, Groh led BU to a commanding 17-5 conference record and the program's first America East regular season crown. He went 7-1 with a school-record 86 strikeouts and opponents hit just .198 against him. Groh's strikeout average (10.9 per game) ranked 17th in the country.
In his final collegiate season in 2008, Groh went 6-3 and fanned 79 in 85.1 innings, leading BU to another regular season title. He was named first team all-conference for the third straight season and made the America East All-Championship Team. Groh graduated with a program-record 23 career wins. He received the John Bilos Alumni Award in 2008.
