Megan Gossfeld-Schmid Named Senior Counselor/Athletics Specialist

Former cross country and track athlete to support student-athletes’ mental wellness goals

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton Division of Athletics has announced the hiring of Megan Gossfeld-Schmid as its Senior Counselor/Athletics Specialist. In her role, she will primarily support student-athletes' mental wellness goals through individual counseling, outreach, and consultations.  

"We are proud to welcome Megan to the Bearcat family," Director of Sports Medicine & Performance Kara Gorgos said. "With her background in clinical counseling and sports psychology, she will equip student-athletes with tools to strengthen mental resilience, manage the demands of competition, and maintain overall well-being.  Her expertise will be a valuable resource in enhancing both performance and personal growth for Binghamton student-athletes. Gossfeld-Schmid's clinical approach draws from Person-Centered, Acceptance and Commitment, and Dialectical-Behavioral therapy.  As a Certified Mental Performance Consultant, she integrates sport psychology to train psychological skills such as imagery, confidence, energy regulation, and goal setting.  Megan is passionate about providing services that emphasize growth, resilience, and skill development."

Gossfeld-Schmid earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she competed in cross country and track.  She competed at the NCAA Division III cross country championships and completed the Twin Cities and Chicago marathons.  

Between 2020 and 2022, Gossfeld-Schmid obtained master's degrees from Minnesota State University, Mankato in Sport and Exercise Psychology and Clinical Mental Health Counseling.  She gained experience working in Minnesota, Alabama, and Mississippi before joining Binghamton University.
