Bearcat alum places 10th in semifinal heat

TOKYO, Japan – Emily Mackay, a 2021 Binghamton alum, ended her trip to the 2025 World Track & Field Championships with a 10th-place finish in her semifinal heat of the women's 1,500 on Sunday evening at the Japan National Stadium.

Running in the first of two 12-runner heats, Mackay clocked a time of 4:12.80. The top six finishers in each heat advanced to Tuesday's finals.

Winning Mackay's heat was defending Olympic gold medalist and world champion Faith Kipyegon of Kenya, who crossed the line with a time of 4:00.34. She also posted the top overall time in the semifinals. Out of the 24 semifinalists, Mackay finished 19th overall.

This marks the second straight world championship meet in which Mackay has advanced to the semifinal round. She also cleared the first round at the Paris Olympics last August.

A five-time United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-American during her years at Binghamton, Mackay capped her career with a sixth-place finish in the women's 1,500 at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
