Binghamton women's tennis sophomore Natalia Aruj has been named the Miller Auto Team Student-Athlete of the Week for Sept. 12.
Aruj went a perfect 4-0 at the season-opening Navy Invitational, capturing the "B" singles flight.
She defeated Sylvia Ecklund of host Navy in Sunday's finals. On Saturday, Aruj outlasted Maitree Root of George Mason, 6-3,4-6,10-8 in the semifinals.
"I'm so pleased for Natalia with the success she had this weekend," head coach Libby McGovern said. "She had a rough year health wise last year and for her to start this fall winning her singles flight is a huge confidence booster. Nat is such a dynamic and intense player; she's extremely demonstrative on the court and feeds off her teammates' energy cheering her on. We came up with simple game plans for each match and then she's able to use the variety of shots at her disposal to keep her opponents off balance. All of Natalia's matches were close and she really proved how mentally strong she can be in pressure situations."
