STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer forced overtime with a goal in the closing seconds but host Stony Brook (4-8-1, 1-2-1 AE) netted its own dramatic goal with 2:36 left in the second extra session to pin a 2-1 loss on the Bearcats (5-8-1, 1-2-1 AE) Sunday afternoon from LaValle Stadium.
Just three days after losing with two seconds left at Hartford, BU appeared to balance its late-game fate when junior midfielder Rebecca Raber launched a 31-yard shot to tie the game with just 21 seconds left in regulation. Raber took a short pass from senior midfielder Emily Nuss, spun, took a dribble and unloaded a right-footed shot into the far left upper netting. It was Raber's first goal of the season.
But the Seawolves netted the game-winner as the second overtime was winding down. After a BU defender was called for a foul 25 yards out, Stony Brook set up for the direct kick on the left side. As the Bearcats were setting up for the cross, a quick restart was rolled down the left wing and the ensuing endline cross was headed in by Regan Bosnyak, who had a step on her mark in the middle.
Binghamton held a 27-13 edge in shots, though most attempts were from outside the box.
"We were a little shaky in the first half and then gave up a goal we could've done better on," head coach Sarah McClellan said. "But the team did a really good job responding after being down. It was a great strike by Raber to get us into overtime. We had some good chances throughout the game ... credit Stony Brook for making the most of their chances."
Stony Brook opened the scoring in the 64th minute after a turnover in BU's defensive third. Seawolves striker Leah Yurko split a pair of Binghamton defenders on the left side with the dribble and beat freshman keeper Katie Hatziyianis to the far post from 12 yards out. The shot banked on off the bottom of the post
The Bearcats had the best chance in the first overtime after junior forward Katherine Corcoran sent a long cross in from the right side. Sophomore midfielder Katie O'Neill extended her leg and just missed making contact from six yards out. O'Neill produced 10 shots during the game - five on goal.
Senior keeper Gaby Gold made four saves in a scoreless first half. Hatziyianis went the rest of the way, making two saves.
Binghamton now returns home for two pivotal games this week - the first of which is a Thursday night tilt with Albany. There are just four games remaining in the regular season as the Bearcats look to secure a top-six postseason position. They are currently tied for seventh in the standings.
