Women’s Soccer Beats UMBC 1-0, Clinches Playoff Spot

Hanley nets game-winner in 2OT; Bearcats grab final playoff spot with clutch road win

Box Score Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. - Freshman forward Patricia Hanley ripped a shot from a wide left angle into the far top netting to give Binghamton women's soccer (7-9-2, 3-3-2 America East) a dramatic 1-0 double overtime win over UMBC (12-4-2, 4-2-2 AE) Sunday afternoon from Retriever Soccer Park. The clutch win was BU's second straight double overtime win on the road. It also was the team's fourth double overtime game in its last five outings.

The victory, combined with New Hampshire's 1-0 win over Stony Brook, gave the Bearcats the sixth and final spot in the postseason. Binghamton will carry the No. 6 seed into Thursday's America East quarterfinals and will face No. 3 New Hampshire at 7 p.m. in Durham. UMBC, the defending conference champion, was playing for the top seed in the tournament and the teams battled through a scoreless regulation that featured very few scoring chances.

Hanley picked a perfect time to score her first collegiate goal. Early in the second overtime, junior forward Katherine Corcoran dribbled to her left before lofting a ball to Hanley down the left side. Despite being marked closely, she dribbled and unleashed a left-footed shot from a tight angle that rippled the top netting to the far post. It was a brilliant game-winning goal with 7:20 left in the second extra session. It was Corcoran's second assist of the season.

Then about 30 minutes later, BU officially clinched its ninth postseason berth in the last 11 years with New Hampshire's shutout of Stony Brook. The Seawolves began the day tied with BU for the final spot and would've advanced in any tiebreak scenario, meaning the Bearcats needed to finish with more points than their SUNY rivals.

"It was an oustanding team effort," head coach Sarah McClellan said. "We shut down UMBC's attack and created some good chances up front. It was a great setup and finish byTrish (Hanley) to send us in for the win."

Senior Gaby Gold (2 saves in first half) and freshman Katie Hatziyianis (2 saves, 57:40 minutes) combined for their sixth shutout of the season. The Bearcats, already without senior center back Connie Gormley, absorbed another injury to the starting back line during the game and also had two other players helped off the field with injuries.

Binghamton held a 15-14 edge in shots.
