Bearcats win four bouts; drop season-opening dual

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. – The Binghamton wrestling team opened its 2014-15 dual match schedule Saturday afternoon falling to Arizona State, 23-15, at the Journeymen Tussle hosted by Shenendehowa High School. The Bearcats picked up four wins on the day, but just one bonus-point victory in their first-ever meeting with the Sun Devils.

Arizona State took an early 3-0 lead with a win at 165, but true freshman Steve Schneider picked up his first collegiate dual victory thanks to a last second take down to even the match. Schneider, who finished fourth at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open last weekend, improved his record to 7-2 with 3-2 win over Ray Waters. In the final seconds of the third period one final lunge allowed Schneider the double-leg take down.

The Sun Devils opened up some breathing room with a major decision at 184 and a fall at 197, extending their lead to 13-3. Arizona State's Blake Stauffer, the nation's ninth ranked wrestler, defeated Jack McKeever before Josh DaSliveira pinned Caleb Wallace in the first period of the 197 bout.

A 10-4 win by No. 20 Tyler Deuel (5-0) over Chace Eskam trimmed the deficit to seven before redshirt freshman Thierno Diallo (4-2) defeated Judson Preskitt, 5-2, at 125 to pull Binghamton within four. Deuel dominated his match throughout while Diallo executed a pair of reversals in the second period to secure his win. A forfeit at 133 handed the Bearcats six points and a 15-13 lead, but it was short-lived as Arizona State won the final three bouts for the 23-15 victory.

Binghamton was one of four schools to take part in the Journeymen Tussle, joining second-ranked Ohio State, Army and Arizona State in the state's capital. Ohio State and Army battled simultaneously with the Bearcats and Sun Devils while OSU and ASU will meet later in the day.

Binghamton returns to action next weekend making the short trip to Ithaca for the New York State Intercollegiate Championship at Cornell University.
