Women’s Soccer Beats Lafayette 2-1 In OT To Extend Streak

Rice nets game-winner 7:03 into first extra period to give BU third straight win

Box Score

EASTON, Pa. - Redshirt freshman forward Jacque Rice scored the game-winner from the top of the box 7:03 into overtime to lift Binghamton women's soccer (3-3) to a 2-1 win over Lafayette Sunday afternoon at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium. The win was BU's third straight after three losses to open the season.

Rice received a throw in on the left side of the box, spun and struck a shot toward the left corner that grazed the hands of the Lafayette keeper and hit the side netting. It was Rice's second tally of the season.
The Bearcats outshot their hosts 20-11 and had five corner kicks.

Binghamton opened the scoring 2:10 before half when sophomore midfielder Katie O'Neill sent a beautiful ball over the top to speedy freshman forward Jocelyn Acor With the keeper charging, Acor chipped the ball over her head for her second goal of the season.

But the lead was short-lived as Lafayette got a header off a cross with just one second remaining in the half to send the teams to the break deadlocked at 1-1.

After a scoreless second period, BU began its first overtime session of 2014 and struck gold on its first shot of the extra frame.

"We kept working hard and didn't give up on the game," head coach Sarah McClellan said. "We got a great goal by Jocelyn (Acor) in the first half but then were a bit disappointed after giving one up so late in the first half. But in the second half and overtime we didn't let down and it was another great effort by Jacque (Rice) on the game-winner."

Freshman keeper Katie Hatziyianis relieved senior starter Gaby Gold in the 36th minute and went the rest of the way for her second win of the season. Both BU keepers made two saves.

Binghamton improved to 3-0 all-time against Lafayette.

The Bearcats play two games in the Buffalo area next weekend, beginning with a Friday afternoon tilt at Niagara.
