Women's Basketball Defeated by Michigan 90-62

Carmody and James each net 17 points, Albrecht adds 12 points


ANN ARBOR, Mich. --The Binghamton women's basketball team opened its 2015-16 season on a historic note, with a trip to the Crisler Center for its first-ever game against Michigan on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats stayed with the Wolverines for most of the first half before losing 90-62.

A pair of Binghamton players made the most of their first games in a Bearcat uniform. Freshman guard Rebecca Carmody finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a pair of steals. Sophomore forward Alyssa James, meanwhile, recorded a double-double with 17 pooints and 10 rebounds. She also turned in a game-high four blocks and five steals.

Senior guard Kim Albrecht added 12 points for the Bearcats, draining three three-point field goals in the process.

"We played very hard today and I was really proud of our effort," head coach Linda Cimino said. "Michigan is a very good team and they shot the ball very well tonight. Rebecca and Alyssa both played very well in their first games for us ."

Michigan, which advanced to the WNIT semifinals last year, was led in scoring by Katelynn Flaherty and Nicole Munger, each of whom scored a game-high 19 points. 
 
Down 22-10, the Bearcats closed the final 1:39 of the first period on a 7-0 run. Albrecht then scored the opening basket 21 seconds into the second period, trimming the deficit to 22-19.

Binghamton was within 29-25 with 3:49 left in the second period. The Wolverines, however, scored nine of the final 11 points to take a 38-27 lead into the half.

Michigan then bloew the game open when it started the third period on a 15-5 run in the opening 4:21 to go up 53-32.

The game was a special one for second-year Binghamton coach Linda Cimino. Kim Barnes Arico, the current Michigan head coach, was Cimino's coach at Caldwell University during the 1999-00 season.

Binghamton hosts NJIT on Monday at 7 pm in its home opener.
