Women’s Basketball Defeated 73-50 at UMBC

Bearcats will face Maine in AE quarterfinals Saturday at noon

BALTIMORE, MD. – Taylor McCarley and Laura Castaldo each scored 14 points, leading UMBC (11-18, 6-10 AE) to a 73-50 win over Binghamton (4-25, 2-14 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Sunday afternoon at the Retriever Athletic Center. The Bearcats now carry the No. 8 seed into the America East Tournament, where they will face top-seeded Maine on Saturday at noon at the Events Center.

The Retrievers shot 45 percent from the field (29-of-64), including 55 percent in the second half (16-of-29). They scored 38 of their points in the paint and netted 20 of them off of turnovers.

The loss overshadowed a career-high 15 points by senior guard Gintare Surdokaite. Freshman guard Imani Watkins added 14 points while senior forward Sherae Swinson finished with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Retrievers led 40-29 with 14:58 left in regulation. The Bearcats, however, went on a 12-2 run to pull within 42-41 with 11:28 remaining. Freshman point guard Jasmine Sina capped the run with a three pointer.

UMBC, however, responded with a 16-1 run to go up 60-44 with 5:33 to left to go.

Sina finished with seven points, five assists, two rebounds and a pair of steals.

NOTE: Binghamton is hosting the America East Women's Basketball Tournament for the second time. The first instance occurred back in 2007 ... Surdokaite's previous career high of 11 points also came against UMBC on Jan. 28, 2015.
