Men's basketball falls at Penn

Bearcats drop non-conference finale 80-45

PHILADELPHIA -- Host Penn (6-7) led from start to finish and pinned an 80-45 loss on Binghamton men's basketball (3-10) Saturday afternoon at The Palestra.

The Bearcats misfired on nine of their first 10 shots and Penn used an 11-0 run to take control after the teams were tied at 5 five minutes into the contest. Binghamton trailed 37-14 at the break and couldn't bring it under 20 the rest of the way.

Sophomore forward Willie Rodriguez tallied game-highs of nine points and six rebounds. Senior guard Marlon Beck added eight points.

"It was a long day," head coach Tommy Dempsey said. "We had a hard time putting the ball in the basket against their zone and then lost some energy in the first half. We weren't able to stay in the game with our energy and our defense. It's not the performance you want heading into conference play but we'll turn the page and start getting ready for Wednesday."

Binghamton shot just 24 percent from the field. Penn made 12-of-32 three-pointers and shot 48 percent from the floor.

The Bearcats wipe the slate clean and host America East favorite Stony Brook in the team's conference opener at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. That game at the Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center will be broadcast on ESPN3.
