VESTAL, N.Y. - Stony Brook (4-7-2, 1-1 America East) scored twice in the first half and kept Binghamton women's soccer (4-7-2, 0-3 AE) off the board - despite BU's 14 shots - in a 3-0 win over the Bearcats Sunday afternoon from LaValle Stadium.
The hosts opened the scoring on a header in the 12th minute and added another goal in the 26th minute on a breakaway.
Trailing 2-0, Binghamton raised its game in the second half but couldn't score despite owning a 9-2 shots advantage. Stony Brook added a final goal in the 58th minute.
"Unfortunately today we started off poorly and Stony Brook was quick to pounce," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We typically have been able to keep things tight defensively but today we were exposed early for lax defensive positioning and were punished for it. However, we had a much better effort in the second half on both ends of the ball and were unlucky not to show finishes for the opportunities created. We need to have a better start and prepare for another strong opponent in Albany."
