BURLINGTON, Vt. – Nikki McFarland scored with 51 seconds left in regulation, lifting Vermont (7-7-3, 2-4-2 AE) to a 1-0 win over Binghamton (6-10-2, 2-6-0 AE) in an America East women's soccer game on Sunday afternoon at Virtue Field. With the victory, the Catamounts snatch the sixth and final berth in the upcoming conference tournament from the Bearcats.
With time running down in regulation, McFarland broke into the box and fired a shot into the top center of the net. It was her first goal of the year.
Binghamton had its opportunities to get on the scoreboard throughout the game. It held an 18-13 shot advantage. Coco Speckmaier, however, finished with 10 saves to preserve the shutout.
"Today was a heartbreaker," first-year head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "Still, we were 0-4 at one point in conference play and could have folded but we fought back and were only a goal away from qualifying for the postseason tournament."
Despite the season-ending loss, the Bearcats doubled their win total from 2015.
"This team has made numerous strides in our culture, technical ability, system of play and fitness," Bhattacharjee said. "Those will be areas of focus we will continue to work on but now we need to do it at a higher level. With this group, we have a strong foundation and good building block to move forward upon."
