VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer (4-8-2, 0-4 America East) looks to continue a string of success against Maine (6-5, 2-2 AE) when the teams meet at noon Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.Â
Needing a win to make a move in the conference standings with just four games remaining, BU will try to extend a 5-1-1 mark against the Black Bears in recent years. Â
Binghamton played an even game against Albany to start a three-game homestand on Thursday but came up short in a 1-0 loss. The defending America East champion Great Danes scored in the 22nd minute and held a 10-5 shots advantage.
The Bearcats have just four regular season games remaining — and they are all against teams just above Binghamton in the standings, meaning BU could leapfrog several with head-to-head wins down the stretch. In the all-time series against Maine, Binghamton leads 8-5-3, including a 2-0 win last October in Orono. The teams played to a scoreless tie on this field back in 2014.     Â
The Black Bears opened conference play with 1-0 wins over Vermont and UMass Lowell but have followed with a 3-0 loss to UMBC and most recently, a 2-0 home loss to Hartford on Thursday. In that game, the Hawks scored twice in a five-minute span midway through the first half for the margin.
The Black Bears return 12 letterwinners from a 2015 team that finished 9-8-2 overall and 4-3-1 in America East play (fourth place). Reigning America East Rookie of the Year Vivien Beil (1-2=4 pts) and fellow All-Rookie selection Anetra Byfield (2-0=4) key the offense. The keeper tandem of Annalena Kriebisch and Samantha Cobotic has allowed just 10 goals in 11 games. Cobotic played against Hartford and made six saves. The team was picked to finish third in the America East Preseason Coaches' Poll.    Â
