BURLINGTON, VT. – Brian Wright scored the game-winning goal, lifting Vermont (13-5-2) to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Binghamton (7-6-6) in an America East Tournament quarterfinal game on Saturday afternoon at Virtue Field. The victory sends the Catamounts to Albany on Wednesday night for a semifinal game.
Wright was in the right place at the right time as an initial shot by Shane Haley was deflected towards an open net. He then tapped in the rebound for his 11th goal of the season.
Less than 25 minutes earlier, Binghamton appeared heading for the semifinal date at Albany.
The Bearcats were clinging to a 1-0 lead, courtesy of a goal by sophomore forward
Nikkos Psarras in the 67th minute. Redshirt sophomore midfielder
Isaiah Barrett crossed the ball into the box and Psarras one timed it into the net for his fifth goal of the year.
With just 3:04 left in regulation, however, Bernard Yeboah tied the game when he fired a shot into the lower-right corner of the net. It was his 11th goal of the season and was assisted by Jon Amar Bodel.
Play was wide open throughout the game with the Catamounts finishing with a 26-19 shot advantage.
In goal, redshirt freshman
Alejandro Cubillo made a career-high 11 saves. At the other end of the field, Aron Runarsson made nine saves for Vermont.
"It's disappointing because we definitely did enough to win the match," head coach
Paul Marco said. "We wanted to finish out the game in regulation but that didn't happen. Our spirit and competitiveness was good the entire match."
Binghamton finished the 2016 campaign with its second straight winning season. In the past two years, the Bearcats have gone 17-14-8.
Currently, Binghamton's RPI is No. 58 out of 206 NCAA Division I men's soccer programs. The Bearcats were ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA East Region Poll earlier in the season and tied a pair of nationally-ranked teams.
Saturday marked the final games in the careers of senior back
Zach Galluzzo and senior forward
Logan Roberts. The Bearcats other nine starters return next year as do all four substitutes from the game against the Catamounts.
"We were a young team this year," Marco said. "And then we lost a number of our veteran players to injuries. But I thought our younger players responded quite well this year. It doesn't make today's loss any better but we have a lot to be proud of."
NOTES: Psarras and junior midfielder
Ben Ovetsky tied for the team lead with five goals and 11 total points during the 2016 season.
