Women's Basketball Storms Back for 80-69 Win at FDU

Bearcats' 18-point rally is largest during their Division I era

TEANECK, N.J. -- Junior guard Imani Watkins scored 25 points and junior center Alyssa James added 19 points, powering Binghamton (2-5) to an 80-69 win over Fairleigh Dickinson (2-5) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Friday night at Stratis Arena. In the process, the Bearcats rallied from 18 points down to stage the largest comeback during their 15-year Division I era.

Binghamton trailed by as much as 34-16 with 7:34 left in the second quarter before storming back for the win. The previous record for the largest Division I era comeback was 17 points, which Binghamton had accomplished twice -- against Boston University on March 9, 2007 in the America East quarterfinals and against UMass Lowell on Jan. 7, 2014.

Watkins, meanwhile, made some history of her own. She is now the first Binghamton player during its 15-year Division I era to reach the 20-point mark five consecutive games. Watkins had been tied with Rachel Laws, who had four consecutive 20-point performances from Dec. 7-30, 2004.

For the season, Watkins continues to lead the America East with 22.4 points per game. She came into the game ranked No. 11 in among all NCAA Division I players.

In addition to her scoring, Watkins added seven rebounds, six assists, a career-high five blocks and three steals. She is the first Binghamton player to record a five-block game since James had seven against Vermont on Feb. 16, 2016.

As for James, she sank seven of her 11 field goal attempts and five of her six free throws to record her highest-scoring game of the year. She has now reached double figures in scoring four straight games.

It was a tale of two halves for the Bearcats, who found themselves down 50-35 at the half. In the third quarter, however, Binghamton settled down defensively to pull within 66-58.

In the opening 3:29 of the fourth quarter, Binghamton went on a 13-0 run to go up 69-66. Watkins had five of her points during that stretch.

Kiana Brown, who led Fairleigh Dickinson with 18 points, trimmed the Bearcat lead to 69-68 with 6:07 left in regulation. That would be, however, the last field goal the Knights made during the game.

Redshirt sophomore point guard Jasmine Sina, who finished with 13 points, had four of them during the final 1:38 of regulation. Watkins scored her final two points at the free throw line with 26 seconds remaining.

"I am really proud of how our team came back in the second half," head coach Linda Cimino said. "They played with a lot of energy and intensity on defense which made the comeback possible."

Freshman guard Kai Moon had eight points and tied Watkins for the game high with seven rebounds. She also recorded a pair of assists.

Sina also tied Watkins for the team lead with six assists. She and James each added three steals.

Brianna Thomas added 16 points for the Knights.

The 80 points represents the Bearcats' highest scoring total since its 90-84 win over Delaware State on Nov. 15, 2004. The three points allowed in the fourth period represents the third-best defensive performance for Binghamton since the NCAA adapted a four-period format last year. Against Cedar Crest on Nov. 21, 2015, the Bearcats surrendered only two points in both the first and fourth periods.

Sina and Watkins, who came into the game tied for the America East lead with 3.2 three-point field goals per game, each drained three shots from beyond the arc against Fairleigh Dickinson.

Binghamton returns to the state of New Jersey for a Tuesday night game against NJIT, starting at 7 p.m.

NOTES: Watkins, who now has 1,060 career points, continues to rank No. 13 in program history. Laura Sario (2004-08) is No. 12 with 1,088 career points ... Watkins now has 21 career games with at least 20 or more points. That ties Andrea Holmes (2008-12) for the most 20-point games by a Binghamton player during the program's Division I era.
