Alyssa James scored a team-high 16 points and junior guard
Imani Watkins netted 15 points, leading Binghamton (5-7) to a 74-53 win over Georgian Court (2-10) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Friday afternoon at the Events Center. With the victory, the Bearcats close out 2016 having won four of their last six games.
James went 7-for-11 from the field to reach double figures in scoring for the seventh time this year. Watkins, meanwhile, also added six rebounds, three assists and a game-high five steals. She now has four games this season and nine during her career with at least five steals.
Freshman guard
Kai Moon nearly recorded a triple double, finishing with nine points, seven rebounds and a career-high nine assists. It is the most assists by a Binghamton player since Watkins had 10 against Nyack on Dec. 15, 2015.
The Bearcats clung to a 32-26 halftime lead but outscored Lions 20-12 in the third period to go up 52-38. From there, Binghamton build a lead as big of 72-42 with 3:44 left in regulation.
As a team, Binghamton finished with a season-high 20 assists. It is the Bearcats' highest total since they also had 20 assists against Columbia on Dec. 7, 2015. In addition, they also went 17-of-21 from the free throw line (81 percent).
"I was glad we played with a lot more energy in the second half," head coach
Linda Cimino said. "We came back from the (holiday) break and needed this game to get ready for Cornell on Sunday and conference play (next week). We shared the ball very well today."
Ten Binghamton players got into the scoring column against Georgian Court, including all five freshmen.
Karlee Krchnavi had seven points and tied Moon for the team high with seven rebounds. Also scoring seven points and blocking a game-high two shots was fellow rookie
Payton Husson.
Alliyah Berger of Georgian Court led all players with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jada Atchison added 13 points while Destiny Thompson also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Watkins, who continues to lead the America East with 20.5 points per game, has now reached double figures in 14 straight games, dating back to last season. In addition, she continued to rank No. 12 in program history with 1,149 career points. In 11th place, with 1,150 points is Erica Carter (2006-10).
Binghamton hosts Cornell on Sunday at 2 p.m. in its final non-conference game of the year.
