Baseball splits doubleheader at Penn

Bearcats win 7-0 opener, lose tough 1-0 game in nightcap

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Three Binghamton pitchers allowed just one run in 17 innings but BU had to settle for a doubleheader split with host Penn Saturday afternoon at Meiklejohn Stadium. The Bearcats (3-14) won the opener 7-0 before Penn (4-8) took the nightcap 1-0.

In the opener, sophomore Jacob Wloczewski and senior Rob Hardy combined to throw a five-hit shutout and BU scored twice in the first, once in the fifth and four more times in the ninth to close out the 7-0 win. Wloczewski (W, 1-0) allowed three hits in 6.0 unblemished innings and lowered his season ERA to 0.82. He struck out four and didn't walk a batter. Hardy entered in the seventh and tossed three clean innings.

The Bearcats jumped ahead in the first inning when senior third baseman David Schanz drew a one-out walk and senior second baseman Reed Gamache belted a two-run home run. In the fifth, BU took advantage of another walk when sophomore shortstop Paul Rufo reached base to lead off. After a single by sophomore DH Jason Agresti and a strikeout, freshman right fielder Daniel Franchi executed a squeeze bunt to score Rufo from third. In the ninth, BU plated four runs on five hits. Gamache led off with a single and junior first baseman Brendan Skidmore clubbed his third home run of the spring. Agresti added an RBI double three batters later and Franchi delivered an RBI single to center for the final margin.

Gamache and Franchi each went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Agresti collected two hits and an RBI. Skidmore drove in a pair with his long ball.

In Game 2, senior Mike Bunal was electric but was pinned with the hard-luck loss after BU surrendered an unearned run in the third inning. Bunal went 8.0 innings and gave up just two hits - an infield single in the second and another single in the fourth. He struck out a career-high 10 and retired the side in order in four of eight innings. Bunal fanned all three hitters in the first and fifth innings.

Penn scored the game's lone run in the third after the leadoff hitter reached on a walk. He moved to second on a sacrifice and after a strikeout, a two-out infield error allowed the runner to score.

The Bearcats put runners on base in seven of nine innings but couldn't cash in. In the ninth, BU nearly rallied with two outs. Junior left fielder Eddie Posavec walked and Rufo followed with a double. But a strikeout ended the threat and the game.

Agresti had two of BU's five hits.

Binghamton hosts Bucknell in its home opener at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
