ITHACA, N.Y. - Host Cornell (9-13) scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally past Binghamton baseball (11-18) 3-2 Wednesday afternoon at Hoy Field.
The Bearcats held a 2-0 lead and seven pitchers had combined to stifle the Big Red on three hits before the hosts broke through in the eighth. Cornell used a hit batter, triple, error and home run to do the damage. Binghamton, meanwhile, stranded 14 runners to keep Cornell within striking range.
Binghamton scored a run in the first inning and added its other run in the eighth. The Bearcats left two runners on base in each of the second, third, eighth and ninth innings and also left the bases loaded in the sixth.
In the first, BU made it 1-0 when senior third baseman
David Schanz drew a one-out walk and scored on an RBI double by senior second baseman
Reed Gamache. In the top of the eighth, sophomore catcher
Jason Agresti hit a two-out double - his team-high 10th two-bagger of the spring - and came around to score on an RBI single up the middle by sophomore center fielder
CJ Krowiak.Â
In the ninth inning, BU put runners on first and second with one out but a fielder's choice and strikeout ended the game.Â
The teams combined to use 19 pitchers in the midweek game.Â
The Bearcats held a 7-5 edge in hits. Sophomore pitcher
Nick Wegmann started the game and went one scoreless inning before moving to the DH role. Wegmann went 2-for-4 - the only BU player with more than one hit. Â
Binghamton hosts Hartford in a three-game America East series this weekend. The teams open with a twinbill Saturday beginning at noon.
