VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior designated hitter
Griffin McIver went 5-for-7 (.714), homered and had five RBI, powering Binghamton (23-12) to a 10-0, 6-5 sweep over Cornell (8-24) in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The games marked the first time the Bearcats have played at home in three weeks.
McIver drove in three runs in the first game, which was decided in just five innings, and had the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning of the finale. Two of her five hits went for extra bases, giving her a slugging percentage of 1.286 for the day.
Senior first baseman
Taylor Chaffee and sophomore outfielder
Jessica Rutherford each drove in three runs during the doubleheader. Chaffee went 3-for-6 (.500) with a double and a triple. Rutherford, meanwhile, was 2-for-5 (.400) with a pair of doubles.
It was Chaffee and McIver that proved to be the winning combination in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game. After Cornell rallied from a 5-2 deficit to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning, Chaffee led off with a double. Sophomore
Jillian Bovitt was inserted as a pinch runner and stole third on a wild pitch. One batter later, McIver clubbed a single off the left-field wall and Bovitt came home with the winning run.
Earlier in the game, McIver broke a 1-1 tie with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. It was her team-best eighth home run of the season.
The Big Red used an error in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 2-2 but the Bearcats used a pair of errors in the bottom of the same inning to retake the lead, 3-2.
Rutherford padded the Bearcats' lead with a two-run double down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth inning, making the score 5-2.
Makenzie Goluba got the win in relief, improving her record to 4-0. The loss was tagged to Meg Parker, whose record dropped to 5-10.
Chaffee started the scoring in the first game with a two-run triple in the bottom of the first inning. She scored one batter later on an error.
The Bearcats plated three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Senior outfielder
Sydney Harbaugh led off the frame with a home run and McIver singled in the other two runs.
One inning later, the Bearcats scored four more times. Rutherford and McIver had RBI doubles during the frame while Chaffee singled home a run. Harbaugh scored the other run on a sacrifice fly.
Senior pitcher
Cara Martin tossed four scoreless innings to pick up the win and improve her record to 6-3. Freshman pitcher
Allison Pritchard preserved the shutout in the top of the fifth inning. Maddie Orcutt took the loss, dropping her record to 3-10.
Junior outfielder
Gabby Bracchi finished the day 2-for-3, drew four walks and scored four times. Harbaugh also scored four times, drew three walks and went 1-for-3.
As a team, the Bearcats hit .364 during the doubleheader.
Up next for Binghamton is a three-game weekend series at home against Stony Brook. The two squads play a noon doubleheader on Saturday and a single game at noon on Sunday.
