Baseball beats UMBC 7-5 to take series

BU scores in four of last five innings to strengthen first-place position in AE standings

BALTIMORE, Md. - Binghamton baseball snapped a 4-4 tie with a run in the seventh inning and the Bearcats (17-20, 12-3 America East) added single runs in the eighth and ninth frames to hold off host UMBC (18-18, 7-7 AE) 7-5 Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field. Binghamton won two of three games in the series to strengthen its hold on first place in the conference standings (+2.5 games).

Even at 4-4 in the seventh, sophomore center fielder CJ Krowiak led off with a single and stole second. He went to third on a single to right field by senior third baseman David Schanz and then scored when senior second baseman Reed Gamache grounded into a double play.

In the eighth inning, BU put another run on the board after leadoff hitter Eddie Posavec reached base. The Bearcats put their leadoff batter on base in seven of the nine innings. Sophomore catcher Jason Agresti dropped a sacrifice bunt down, moving Posavec to second. He went to third on a groundout and then with two out, sophomore right fielder Chris McGee ripped a shot past the shortstop that scored Posavec to make it 6-4.

UMBC kept pressing, however, and a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the eighth made it 6-5. The Retrievers then put the tying run on second before sophomore reliever Dylan Stock entered and recorded a swinging strikeout to end the inning.

The Bearcats again put a leadoff hitter aboard in the ninth and five batters later, Agresti sent a deep balll to the track in left field, scoring Schanz from third. In the bottom of the ninth, UMBC brought the tying run to the plate but Krowiak made a diving catch in center to take away a hit and Stock blew one past the final hitter on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.

Sophomore starter Jacob Wloczewski (W, 3-0) went seven innings and scattered four runs on six hits. Stock notched his first collegiate save.

Krowiak, Schanz and Gamache each went 2-for-4 and Agresti contributed two RBI.

Binghamton hosts New York Institute of Technology in a three-game non-conference series beginning on Saturday.
