Softball Defeats UMBC 3-2, Sweep Conference Series

Bearcats stretch winning streak to 11 games after walk off victory

BALTIMORE, MD. – Junior outfielder Gabby Bracchi drove in two runs, including the game winner in the bottom of the seventh inning, leading Binghamton (19-9, 6-0 AE) to a 3-2 win at UMBC (16-20, 1-5 AE) in an America East softball game on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Bearcats sweep the three-game series against the Retrievers and extend their winning streak to 11 games.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, sophomore third baseman Kate Richard reached on a fielder's choice. She advanced to second on a single by sophomore second baseman Stephanie Bielec and then scored on Bracchi's base hit into left field.

Up until the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bearcats had been held to just one hit. UMBC, by contrast, got four hits in the top of the first inning alone to take a 2-0 lead. Kaelin Jackson had the key hit with a two-run double.

On the mound, Jessica Holt retired the first seven Binghamton batters she faced. A pair of UMBC errors, however, gave the Bearcats runners on first and third base with one out in the bottom of the third inning. Bracchi then reached on a fielder's choice and Richard scored on the play.

Senior Taylor Chaffee broke up the no hitter with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2. It was her third home run of the season.

Sophomore pitcher Sarah Miller tossed three scoreless innings in relief to raise her record to 10-5. She has now pitched 15 consecutive scoreless innings.

Holt went the distance but was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 8-8.

Chaffee finished the weekend series 4-for-9 (.444) and extended her hitting streak to a career-best 11 games. Senior designated hitter Griffin Mclver went 1-for-3 on Sunday and finished the series 4-for-8 (.500).

Binghamton returns home on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against Syracuse.
