BURLINGTON, VT—The Binghamton women's lacrosse team (6-11, 2-4 AE) defeated Vermont (6-10, 2-4 AE) today by a score of 13-8. It was a bittersweet ending to the Bearcats' season, as the team was mathematically eliminated from making the America East playoffs earlier in the day.
"The girls played really well today, and the seniors especially stepped up in their final game," stated head coach
Stephanie Allen. "All week we just focused on extending the season, and although that didn't happen I think it was evident that we wanted it more out there today."
Binghamton scored early and often to build a 7-3 lead at the half.
Sophia Racciatti scored 1:30 into the game, but it would not be her last.
Callon Williams scored next, and Racciatti made it 3-1 with 24:29 left in the first period. After a UVM goal, BU ripped off four straight—Williams,
Olivia Batista, Racciatti, and
Tiffany Ryan—to take a 7-2 advantage.
Williams scored to open the second half, and
Valerie DeNapoli added a goal less than two minutes later. Vermont cut the lead to 9-5, but
Jacqueline Kennedy and Racciatti each scored to make it 11-5. Williams then joined Racciatti with four goals on the day. The scoring for the season closed for Binghamton at 2:22, when
Marissa Rose gave the team its thirteenth of the game. For the senior it was her first goal since her freshman season.
Racciatti and Williams' eight goals made it two straight games in which two Bearcats tallied four goals apiece.
"Their leadership was great obviously," reflected Allen. "They have the ability to distribute to others while also recognizing and creating opportunities for themselves. They've set the precedent very high for the offense going forward."
Erin McNulty dazzled in net, making a season-high thirteen saves to keep the Bearcats out in front all day. The senior also scooped up five groundballs in her final contest.
"Erin was on another level today, I'm so proud of her performance today," remarked Allen. "She's left a huge impact on this program, and she leaves some big shoes to fill going forward."
The Bearcats end the season on a high note, winning back-to-back road conference games for the first time in program history. The team graduates five seniors, and returns five of six double-digit scorers for next season.
