Baseball win streak snapped at Siena

Agresti blasts 3-run home run, Gamache extends hit streak in 8-7 loss

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (23-21) surrendered five runs in the final two innings and lost at Siena (18-28) 8-7 Tuesday afternoon at Siena Field. The defeat snapped BU's season-high eight game win streak.

The Bearcats led 4-3 after six innings but the hosts tallied three runs on just two hits to claim the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh inning. Siena tacked on two more runs in the eighth to build an 8-4 lead and needed each of those insurance runs to hold off a BU rally in the ninth.

Sophomore catcher Jason Agresti belted a three-run home run with one out in the ninth to pull the Bearcats to within one, 8-7. Then BU put two more runners on and moved the tying run 90 feet away before a groundout and fly out ended the game.

Binghamton outhit Siena 13-11 but left 12 men stranded. Six BU pitchers got work in with junior Nicholas Liegi producing the best results. Liegi allowed just one hit in two scoreless frames.

Senior second baseman Reed Gamache went 3-for-5 to extend his hit streak to 16 games. Gamache also drove in his league-leading 41st run of the season. Senior third baseman David Schanz went 2-for-4 with two RBI and freshman right fielder Daniel Franchi went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Junior first baseman Brendan Skidmore had the other RBI - his 34th of the season.

Siena used a pair of first-inning doubles to jump ahead 1-0. Binghamton briefly tied it with a run in the third on a Gamache two-out single before the Saints put two on the board in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead. The Bearcats tied it again with two runs in the fifth - a Schanz RBI single and Skidmore sacrifice fly - and then took the lead one inning later when Schanz executed a squeeze bunt that scored Franchi from third.

Binghamton resumes conference play on Saturday when it squares off against longtime SUNY rival Albany in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. in the capital city.
