Erin Bogdanovich fired a four-hit shutout, leading Maine (27-19) to a 3-0 win over Binghamton (34-14) in an America East Tournament winner's bracket game on Friday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex on Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Bearcats will face Albany in an elimination game on Saturday morning at a time at 10 am. The Great Danes eliminated Stony Brook 9-7 later in the day.Â
The winner of the Binghamton-Albany game will face Maine in the championship round, starting at 1 p.m. Should the Black Bears win that game, they will clinch the America East title. A loss would force a deciding game on Sunday at noon.
Bogdanovich, who earlier in the week was named the America East Pitcher of the Year, defeated the Bearcats for the third time this season, raising her record to 9-4. She struck out three batters, issued only one walk and did not allow an extra-base hit.Â
The Black Bears gave Bogdanovich all of the run support she'd need in the bottom of the first inning. Alyssa Derrick, who was named the conference's Rookie of the Year earlier in the week, had the key hit with a two-out, two-run double.
Binghamton loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third inning. Bogdanovich, however, was able to get out of the jam when she caught a line drive hit by senior catcher
Taylor Chaffee.
Sophomore outfielder
Jessica Rutherford went 2-for-3. For the tournament, she is now hitting .500 (4-for-8). Also going 2-for-3 was senior first baseman
Lisa Cadogan.
Sophomore pitcher
Sarah Miller settled down after the bottom of the first inning, but took the loss and fell to 15-7.
