Baseball edged by Albany late 4-3

Rufo goes 4-for-5, Agresti hits 3-run double but Danes walk-off in ninth inning

ALBANY, N.Y. - Albany tallied two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally past Binghamton baseball (25-22, 17-4 America East) 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field. One day after clinching the regular season title, BU rested several starters and lost for just the fourth time in 21 conference games.

On the strength of a bases-clearing double by sophomore catcher Jason Agresti in the third inning, BU built a 3-0 lead. But the Bearcats were held off the scoreboard the rest of the way, despite collecting 12 hits, loading the bases seven times and putting 17 runners in scoring position. Binghamton left 14 runners on base and Albany scored once each in the fourth and sixth innings and then the Great Danes won the game with two runs in the ninth.

Sophomore shortstop Paul Rufo went 4-for-5 and sophomore infielder Luke Tevlin had two hits. Agresti (2-for-4) raised his RBI count to 30 with his big blast.

Sophomore starter Nick Wegmann went 5.0 innings and allowed just one run on seven hits. He struck out three and lowered his season ERA to 3.64. Freshman Nick Gallagher limited Albany (20-25, 8-12 AE) to a run on three hits in his 3.0 innings.

In the ninth, Albany used two singles, two walks and a wild pitch to push across the tying and winning runs. With one out and the bases loaded, the Great Danes tied the game on a wild pitch and then won it on a sacrifice fly to right.

In the third inning, sophomore center fielder CK Krowiak drew a one-out walk and stole second. Senior second baseman David Schanz reached base on a passed ball and classmate Reed Gamache walked to load the bases. Agresti followed with a blast to center field that cleared the bases. It was his conference-leading 16th double of the season.

The Great Danes used three singles and a groundout to get on the board in the fourth and then made it 3-2 with a run on two singles and a groundout in the sixth.

The Bearcats will wrap up the regular season with a three-game home series against Maine this Friday and Saturday. The teams will open with a twinbill beginning at noon on Friday.
