VESTAL, N.Y. - Senior second baseman
Reed Gamache drove in a career-high seven runs in the opener and senior
Mike Bunal fired six shutout innings in the nightcap as Binghamton baseball (22-20, 14-3 America East) kept rolling with a doubleheader sweep of Stony Brook (20-22, 9-6 AE) Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field. With the pair of wins, first-place BU stretched its win streak to a season-high seven and remained the nation's only unbeaten team at home (11-0).
In the opener, Gamache belted two home runs and drove in seven - one shy of the school record. He hit a two-run shot in the first inning and added a three-run blast to key a five-run BU outburst in the fifth inning. The five runs snapped a 2-2 tie and gave the Bearcats a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Up 7-3 one inning later, Binghamton tacked on three more runs - two on a bloop double down the right field line from Gamache, who went 3-for-5.
Junior starter
Jake Cryts (W, 5-4) limited the Seawolves to three runs over five innings before giving way to senior
Rob Hardy, who tossed four strong innings for his fifth save of the season. Hardy allowed one earned run and struck out a pair.
Sophomore center fielder
CJ Krowiak, senior third baseman
David Schanz, sophomore catcher
Jason Agresti and second-year right fielder
Chris McGee all had two hits and an RBI. Agresti launched his fourth home run of the season in the seventh inning - a one-out solo shot over the left field wall.
In Game 2, Bunal (W, 6-3) kept Stony Brook in check through six shutout innings. He stranded seven baserunners and struck out six. Sophomore
Dylan Stock (S, 3) struck out one in a clean seventh inning.
The Bearcats snapped a scoreless game with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Gamache drew a one-out walk and went to third on a double to left center off the bat of junior first baseman
Brendan Skidmore. Junior catcher
Eddie Posavec then plated Gamache with an RBI single through the right side.
In the fifth, McGee singled through the right side, advanced to second on a wild pitch and took third in a sacrifice bunt by junior left fielder
Darian Herncane. Krowiak then scored McGee with a single through the left side.Â
Binghamton had six hits - one each by six different players.
The teams wrap up their three-game set with a single game at noon on Sunday. Sophomore
Nick Wegmann (1-0, 4.29 ERA) gets his first America East start.
