COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Binghamton baseball staged another postseason rally but second-seeded Minnesota (35-21) pulled away following a 58-minute rain delay and the Gophers eliminated the fourth-seeded Bearcats (30-25) 8-5 Saturday evening in the NCAA Regional at Blue Bell Park. After claiming the program's third America East title in the last four years and battling No. 1 ranked Texas A&M in a tight opening-night loss, BU's championship season came to a close.Â
Binghamton trailed 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth before scoring five runs to even the score. But after junior left fielder
Eddie Posavec delivered a two-out, two-run single to right center to tie the game, the tarp came out and BU's momentum was slowed.Â
After the delay, Minnesota got the final out of the fifth, stranding BU runners at first and third. The Gophers then used a bloop leadoff single and RBI triple inside the first base bag to take the lead for good. Minnesota added a sacrifice fly to make it 7-5 and tacked on a solo home run in the eighth inning to complete the scoring.Â
The teams played four scoreless innings before combining for 10 runs in the wild fifth frame. The Gophers got to BU junior starter
Jake Cryts with five hits, including back-to-back run scoring doubles. But eight days after mounting an historic nine-run rally to erase a 6-0 deficit to Hartford at the America East tournament, BU wiped out a five-run hole against the Gophers.Â
Junior catcher
Jason Agresti led off with a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. After a groundout, Agresti tagged and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder
Chris McGee. With two out, freshman DH
Daniel Franchi drew a walk - beginning a run of six straight BU batters to reach base. After a single by sophomore center fielder
CJ Krowiak, senior third baseman
David Schanz ripped an RBI single to make it 5-2. Senior second baseman
Reed Gamache reached on a fielder's choice and that loaded the bases for junior first baseman
Brendan Skidmore. He hit a sharp grounder to short and reached when the throw to first sailed high, bringing in the Bearcats' third run. With the grounds crew ready to move, Posavec followed with his two-run hit and the game was halted shortly thereafter.Â
The Bearcats put their leadoff hitter on in the seventh when Schanz roped a single to center. But back-to-back hard liners to left and third base and an infield grounder ended the threat. Â Â
Senior
Rob Hardy relieved Cryts in the fifth inning and worked the final 4.2 innings. Â
Posavec was named to the all-tournament team after collecting three hits and three RBI and throwing out two baserunners in the two games. Â
In each's final collegiate game, Schanz and Gamache went out strong. Schanz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Gamache had a single to extend his consecutive games reached base to 27 to end his career. Â
