Women's soccer ties St. Bona 1-1

Acor nets goal in 62nd minute; BU gets solid result in season opener

OLEAN, N.Y. - Sophomore forward Jocelyn Acor scored the equalizer in the 62nd minute and Binghamton women's soccer earned a 1-1 double overtime draw with host St. Bonaventure in the season opener for both teams Friday night at Marra Complex.

The Bearcats, who gave up a goal in the 23rd minute, pressed hard for the winner in overtime and outshot Bona 14-11 for the game, including 4-0 in overtime.

Sophomore midfielder Patty Loonie nearly won it at the final horn but her 20-yard strike to the left corner was stopped with a diving save by Bonnies keeper Lauren Malcolm. Earlier in the first overtime period, senior defender Allison Mack had a point-blank header at the far post after a BU corner kick but Malcolm tipped the redirect off the crossbar.

"I'm proud of our effort tonight," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We showed glimpses of good play in the first half but we weren't consistent enough, especially with the defensive effort. Once we made a few small tactical adjustments, primarily with our work rate and pressure, it changed the game in the second half. It also showed in our confidence on the ball in the attacking end and the overall competitive spirit this team has."

After a sluggish start that included a Bonnies goal on a close-range shot 22:13 into the contest, BU began to take control of play at the start of the second half. The speedy Acor started disrupting St. Bona's back line and when she intercepted a ball on the left and turned it into a clear-cut breakaway, the game was even. Acor slotted a right-footed shot into the lower left corner for her third career goal.

Binghamton generated eight shots after halftime and received solid contributions from all 16 participants, including six freshmen who made their collegiate debuts.

Junior keeper Katie Hatziyianis was called on to make just two saves.

"We are disappointed to not get the win as we created solid chances but the team is pleased with the style we played after halftime," Bhattacharjee added. "This is a very positive step for us and we will only continue to get better and evolve from this result."

The Bearcats remain in Western New York to prepare for their Sunday afternoon tilt at Niagara. Kick-off against the Purple Eagles is set for 1 p.m.
