Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu)

Women's soccer edged by Lafayette 1-0

Home opener draws 718 to Bearcats Sports Complex

VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Lafayette (2-0-1) netted the game's lone goal in the eighth minute and Binghamton women's soccer (1-1-1) suffered a 1-0 loss in the team's home opener Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. It was the team's first setback after a two-game unbeaten streak to open 2016.

Starting the 10th year of soccer at the turf complex, which opened in 2007, BU drew a big crowd of 718 for "Code Green" night.

"It's a disappointing loss," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We felt like it was an opportunity for us ... but we were a little late to some 50/50 balls and our 1-on-1 defending was soft at times. But give credit to Lafayette. They stuck to their game plan and moved the ball well. We had chances in the second half after we made some adjustments but it was a little too late for us."

Lafayette struck early and made the goal stand for nearly 83 minutes. Senior back Julie Wescott sent a corner kick bouncing toward the edge of the box, where sophomore teammate Katie Brannigan flicked it over her head toward the goal. The high ball came down on the head of senior midfielder Monica Weiss, who gained position at the six yard box and headed it past BU keeper Katie Hatziyianis.

The Bearcats began to use their short passing attack to hold possession in the second half and had several good opportunities to knot the score midway through the frame. Freshman midfielder Lauren Spinnato accepted a pass into the middle from classmate Ryan Reilly with just over 29 minutes left and banged her hard shot off the crossbar. With just over 10 minutes left, freshman back Sam O'Malley combined a takeaway with a long run down the right side. Her ball over the top created a dangerous chance for sophomore forward Jocelyn Acor before the Lafayette keeper took control of the loose ball.

Binghamton held a 7-5 edge in shots. Hatziyianis made three saves.

The Bearcats host Buffalo at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
