Men’s Soccer Defeats Canisius 2-1 in Season Opener

Weilbacher nets goal and tallies an assist

VESTAL, N.Y. – Sophomore midfielder Harrison Weilbacher finished with a goal and an assist, powering Binghamton (1-0-0) to a 2-1 victory over Canisius (0-1-0) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Friday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The game marked the first time the Bearcats have opened a season at home since 2009.

The three points marks a career-high for Weilbacher, who was named to the America East All-Rookie Team in 2015. Sophomore forward Nikos Psarras, meanwhile, netted the other Bearcat goal. Dating back to last season, he has now scored in two of Binghamton's last three games.

It didn't take long for Weilbacher and Psarras to make an impact against Canisius. Just 5:25 into the game, Weilbacher found Psarras, who was open inside the penalty box. Psarras then slid his shot into the net.

Binghamton stayed on top of the match for the next 20 minutes but the Golden Griffs deadlocked the game on a goal by Hakeem Milson in the 28th minute. Matthew Santos and Melvin Blair were credited with the assists. Milson was left open right in front of the goal.

In the 36th minute, Weilbacher put the Bearcats ahead for good when he converted a free kick from just outside the penalty box. He ripped his shot into the upper left corner of the net.

Although the Bearcats finished with a 13-11 advantage in shots, the Golden Griffs held a 7-4 advantage in the scoreless second half. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Alejandro Cubillo made a pair of critical saves in the last 20 minutes of regulation to preserve the win.

"I thought was started the match very well," head coach Paul Marco said. "Being the first game of the season, I thought both teams were up for the game. "We moved the ball quite well in the first half but got a little tired in the second half. (Canisius) has some special players that kept them in the match but I am delighted that we got three points tonight."

Binghamton travels to George Washington on Monday for a 2 p.m. game.
