VESTAL, N.Y. - After two straight home games, Binghamton women's soccer (1-1-2) makes a trip to New York City to face Manhattan (1-3-0) Friday night. The Bearcats and Jaspers will kick-off at 7 p.m. at Gaelic Park.Â
Binghamton has been idle for four days following a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Buffalo on Sunday. The double overtime tie gives BU three positive results in four games thus far. Despite a rash of injuries to his roster, first-year head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee has seen many positives, including the play of his freshmen class. First-year players
Sam O'Malley,
Lauren Spinnato,
Ryan Reilly,
Barbara Badeer,
Carly Barnett have averaged more than 67 minutes a game and freshman forward
Sydney Corda drew praise from Bhattacharjee as being one of the team's most impactful players in the Buffalo contest.Â
Junior keeper
Katie Hatziyianis sports a 0.68 goals against average and is coming off a brilliant performance against the Bulls, with several point-blank saves.
Up front, sophomore midfielder
Patty Loonie leads the team with two goals, including a game-winner. Redshirt junior
Michele Galvin has two assists and dangerous speedster
Jocelyn Acor has added a goal.
Though it's a non-conference game, the matchup with the Jaspers will give BU a sense of its current standing in the America East by way of score comparisons. Manhattan has already played three America East schools, losing to Hartford, New Hampshire and Vermont by identical 1-0 scores. The UNH game went to overtime.
"Manhattan will be another difficult opponent for us to face on the road," Bhattacharjee said. "They are an organized, well coached team. They play a unique counterattacking style that is different than what we have seen in our previous matches this fall. We will need to play a complete and solid 90 minutes and if we do we can have the chance for a result in what will be a tough environment."
Manhattan was picked to finish fourth (out of 11) in the MAAC Preseason Poll after going 11-5-3 and coming within a win of reaching the NCAA tournament a year ago. Eighteen letterwinners are back from that team, including All-MAAC First Team selection Erica Modena and 2015 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year Jenny Bitzer. A year ago, Modena ranked second in the MAAC and 28th nationally with 13 goals. Bitzer, meanwhile, led the Jaspers' defense that recorded 11 shutouts and allowed just 14 goals - a school-record and MAAC-low total.
Binghamton leads the all-time series 2-1-1. The Jaspers won the last meeting in 2014, 2-1. The last time the teams met in Riverdale BU prevailed 1-0 in 2013. Â Â Â Â
