VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer (4-3-2) wraps up its non-conference slate Sunday afternoon when regional rival Cornell (2-4) makes the short trip down. The teams will kick-off at noon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Binghamton looks to rebound from a tough 1-0 loss to Bryant on Thursday. The visiting Bulldogs scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute courtesy of a carom off a player's arms. Before that result, BU had won three of its last four and has already eclipsed last year's win total.
Senior forward
Leighann Bennett and sophomore forward
Jocelyn Acor lead the team with two goals and five points apiece. Each has a game-winning goal. Redshirt junior
Michele Galvin has a team-high three assists and five points as well. Sophomore midfielder
Patty Loonie has scored two goals in six games played.
The Bearcats' defense has only allowed one opponent (Lehigh) to score more than one goal this season. A starting back line of senior
Allison Mack, junior
Hannah Shankman and freshmen
Sam O'Malley and
Barbara Badeer has teamed with junior keeper
Katie Hatziyianis (0.73 GAA) to produce three shutouts.Â
The Big Red know a thing or two about shutouts. Last season, Cornell posted 10 consecutive shutouts to open the season. This year, the Big Red has dropped four in a row after starting the season 2-0. But the team has faced a challenging schedule that includes No. 23 Rutgers (L 2-0), Syracuse (L 2-1, ot), San Diego State (L 1-0) and Seton Hall (L 1-0).
Today's teams have one common opponent, both having defeated Siena, 1-0. Cornell beat the Saints 1-0 in its season opener on the road and one week later BU beat Siena in overtime. Cornell returns 20 letterwinners (16 upperclassmen) from a 9-4-4 team of a year ago. That team wound up tied for fifth in the Ivy League.  Â
Cornell leads the all-time series 5-2-2. The Big Red have won four in a row, including a pair of 1-0 wins in each of the last two seasons. The last BU win was a 2-1 home victory in 2012.   Â
After the Cornell game, BU readies for its America East opener next Sunday at Hartford.
