Men’s Soccer Loses 2-1 at Columbia

Novoth scores in 38th minute, but Lions score pair of second-half goals

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Arthur Boshua scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute, leading Columbia (4-1-0) to a 2-1 victory over Binghamton (3-2-3) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Sunday afternoon. The loss snapped the Bearcats' four-game unbeaten streak in road games this season.

The Bearcats had the momentum in the first half. Redshirt junior back Charlie Novoth scored on a free kick in the 38th minute and the Lions were issued a red card.

Despite playing shorthanded, the Lions tied the game in the 53rd minute. Francisco Argrest fired a shot from just outside the box for his first goal of the year.

Play went back and fourth over the ensuing 29 minutes until Zach Mourant fired a long ball into the box, where Boshua was stationed. Boshua then finished off the play for his third goal of the season.

Binghamton made a furious push for the game-tying goal in the final seven minutes of regulation. The Bearcats fired four shots, one of which hit the cross bar.

In goal, redshirt freshman Alejandro Cubillo finished with five saves.

Binghamton outshot Columbia 15-12 for the game but Zach Adler made six saves to preserve the victory.

"Give Columbia credit," head coach Paul Marco said. "They are a good team and were able to get two goals after they had a player sent off."

Binghamton returns to the Bearcats Sports Complex for its Homecoming Game against Buffalo on Saturday at 6 p.m.

"We are looking to have a good week of training," Marco said. "Buffalo is a very good team and we will look to be up for that match."

NOTES: The other Binghamton loss this year was a 4-0 neutral-site game against current No. 15 Loyola-Chicago on Sept. 11 … Novoth's goal was his first of the year. He also has a pair of assists … Binghamton now has converted two free kicks into goals this season … of Binghamton's nine goals this year, Novoth is the seventh different player to have scored.
