VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer looks to continue its strong start to the 2016 season when BU (2-1-2) hosts Siena (1-2-2) at 2 p.m. Monday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The home game begins a stretch that will see four of the team's next five games at the Complex.Â
Binghamton is coming off a 1-0 road win at Manhattan on Friday and is already closing in on last year's season win total. At Manhattan, senior forwardÂ
Leighann Bennett hit a rocket to the opposite upper 90 in the 49th minute and the brilliant goal stood up as the winner. Just 3:17 into the second half, senior defenderÂ
Allison Mack sent a long ball toward the endline on the left. Sophomore forwardÂ
Jocelyn Acor tracked it down behind her mark and touched the ball back to Bennett outside the box on the left. Bennett positioned the ball back on her right foot and startled the Manhattan defense and keeper by striking a crisp, sharp-angled ball that sailed into the far right corner of the net. Acor drew an assist on the play.
With the win, BU remained unbeaten in road games (2-0-1) this fall.Â
The Bearcats, meanwhile, played a steady defensive game and outshot their hosts 12-5.Â
Junior keeper
Katie Hatziyianis (0.55 GAA) was called on to make just one save and notched her second shutout of the season.
Sophomore midfielder
Patty Loonie leads the team with two goals and four points thus far this fall. Acor has a goal and an assist and redshirt junior midfielder
Michele Galvin has two assists. Â
The defending MAAC champion Saints return seven starters from a 12-win team that advanced to the NCAAs last fall. Siena was picked to finish second (out of 11) in the MAAC Preseason Poll. Senior captain Tara Sobierajski and junior midfielder Madison Vasquez, both preseason all-conference selections, lead the team. Sobierajski, an all-region center back, helped the '15 Saints post nine shutouts and a school-record shutout streak that reached 504 minutes.
Siena is coming off a 2-1 home loss to fellow America East school Hartford on Thursday. Earlier in the season, the Saints tied UNH 0-0 and beat Albany 1-0. Former BU standout
Stephani Church is in her first season on the coaching staff. Â
Binghamton leads the all-time series 8-2-1. The last three games between the two teams have all ended in 2-1 scores, including a BU home win in the last meeting two seasons ago. The last five encounters have each been decided by one goal.Â
