VESTAL, N.Y. - Redshirt junior
Michele Galvin scored the game-winning goal with 2:51 left in the first overtime to give Binghamton women's soccer (3-1-2) a 1-0 win over visiting Siena (1-3-2) Monday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The win over the reigning MAAC champion Saints stretched BU's unbeaten streak to three.
With time winding down in the first extra period, freshman defender
Sam O'Malley made a run up the right side and fed classmate
Ryan Reilly streaking down the wing. Reilly dribbled into the box and sent a cross into the middle that eluded a Siena defender. Galvin collected the ball, took a touch to her right foot and struck a 13-yard shot into the left corner to end the affair.
Junior goalie
Katie Hatziyianis made six saves to post her second straight shutout and third of the season.
Siena held a 16-5 shots margin, thanks primarily to a 9-1 command in the first half. The Bearcats, however, picked up their play in the second half and overtime.
"This game more than any game showcased our depth," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We really needed that today, playing the second game of the weekend. Our depth took us through the second half and overtime and we were able to pick it off at the end and get the win. We didn't have a lot of possession in the first half and we wanted to change that. We wanted to attack and be more of the aggressor and once we did that, the game flipped for us in the second half and overtime. And that was a quality fiinish for Michele (Galvin) under pressure."
Binghamton returns to action Friday night at Lehigh before hosting Temple next Sunday afternoon.
