VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer (3-1-2) puts its three-game unbeaten streak on the line Friday night against a Lehigh team (3-0-1) that is unbeaten for the season. The squads will meet at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex in Bethlehem.
The Bearcats are coming off a dramatic 1-0 overtime win over reigning MAAC champion Siena on Sunday - the team's second straight 1-0 victory. Redshirt junior midfielder
Michele Galvin scored the game winner with 2:51 left in the first extra period.
Riding a three-game unbeaten string, BU is off to its best start since 2013. Thanks to a stout defense, the Bearcats have made the most of its five goals this season, winning three games by a 1-0 score and earning a pair of 1-1 ties with the other goals.
Led by a starting back line that has featured senior
Allison Mack and freshmen
Sam O'Malley and
Barbara Badeer, BU has allowed just three goals in 587 minutes of soccer. Junior keeper
Katie Hatziyianis owns a 0.46 goals against average with three shutouts.
Up front, sophomore midfielder
Patty Loonie leads the team with two goals. Galvin has a goal and two assists and sophomore forward
Jocelyn Acor has one goal and one assist.
Lehigh has been even more stingy to start 2016. The Mountain Hawks have outscored opponents 10-0. After a season-opening scoreless tie against reigning Patriot League regdular season champ Monmouth, Lehigh has hammered three straight opponents: LIU Brooklyn (3-0), Marist (3-0) and most recently, Mt. St. Mary's (3-0) last Saturday. Dating back to last season, opponents have been kept off the board for nearly 500 straight minutes.
Picked to finish seventh (of 10) in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, Lehigh returns its top seven scoring leaders, including sophomore Sabrina Mertz, who scored seven goals a year ago. Senior Tori Pantaleo leads the team with four goals. Freshman keeper Sam Miller has made 17 saves and has begun her career with four consecutive shutouts.
Lehigh leads the all-time series 5-2. Last fall in Vestal, the Mountain Hawks rolled to a 4-0 win, thanks to a pair of goals in the game's first 12 minutes. The last BU win in the series was a 4-0 home win in 2012.Â
After Friday's away game, BU returns home to host Temple at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
