Women’s Basketball Loses 76-73 at Hartford in Double OT

James nets 18 points, Sina adds 17 points, Watkins has 16 points and 11 rebounds

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. –  The Binghamton women's basketball team (9-11, 4-3 AE) rallied from 12 points down in regulation but lost 76-73 in double overtime to Hartford (14-6, 5-2 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Wednesday night at the Reich Family Pavilion. The two teams had been tied for second place in the conference entering the contest.

Junior center Alyssa James netted a team-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds, two assists, a block and four steals. Redshirt sophomore guard Jasmine Sina finished with 17 points while junior guard Imani Watkins turned in a 16-point, 11-rebound performance to notch her fifth career double-double.

Hartford appeared to have command of the game, as it was up 46-34 with 2:12 left in the third period. From there, however, the Bearcats went on a 17-4 run to go up 51-50 with 6:26 remaining in the fourth period. James capped the run with five straight points, including the go-ahead three-point play.

The Hawks quickly retook the lead and were ahead 60-57 with 2:31 left in regulation. After two minutes of scoreless action, freshman guard Carly Boland sank a three-point field goal to force overtime.

In the first extra period, Sina drilled a long-distance three-point field goal with no time left on the shot clock, putting the Bearcats ahead 70-65 with 1:12 left to go. The Hawks, however, rallied for the final five points to force double overtime. Sierra DaCosta deadlocked the game on a three-point play with 29 seconds remaining.

Freshman guard Kai Moon converted a three-point play to put the Bearcats up 73-71 with 3:21 left in the second overtime period. Those would be the final Binghamton points, however, as Hartford ended the game on a 5-0 run. The Bearcats had a chance to tie the game, but missed a three-point attempt with 14 seconds left to go.

DeCosta led all scorers with 23 points. Lindsey Abed added 13 points while Darby Lee grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

Watkins now has 1,278 career points and moves into fifth place all time in program history. Against Hartford, she passed Cathy Mackin (1994-98), who scored 1,269 points.

The Hawks came into the game ranked sixth in the nation with 12 steals per game but the Bearcats held a 9-8 advantage in that category. In addition, Binghamton scored 29 points off of turnovers.

Binghamton's last double-overtime game came against UMBC back on March 1, 2014. The Bearcats lost that game 66-60.

The Bearcats return home to face Maine on Saturday at 2 p.m.
