Alyssa James turned in a 17-point, 10-rebound, six-block performance and freshman guard
Carly Boland poured in a career-best 16 points, powering Binghamton (6-8, 1-0 AE) to a 69-62 win over UMBC (5-9, 0-1 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Wednesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The victory is the first conference opening win for the Bearcats in three seasons as well as its fifth win in the past seven games this year.
James, who also had four assists and a pair of steals, recorded her second double-double of the season as well as the ninth of her career. Her six blocks was a season high and marked the seventh time in her career she has finished a game with at least five rejections.
Boland, meanwhile, went 4-for-7 from beyond the three-point line to finish in double figures for the first time in her career. She also added six rebounds, four assists and a pair of blocks.
Two other Bearcat players reached double figures in scoring. Redshirt sophomore guard
Jasmine Sina had 13 points to go along with a team-high five assists. Sophomore forward
Rebecca Carmody, meanwhile, chipped in 10 points and six rebounds to record her second straight double-figure performance.
"Tonight was a great time win," head coach
Linda Cimino said. "It's great to start off conference play 1-0 and I am really proud of our team. We showed tonight that we have many different players who can score for us."
The Bearcats trailed 32-31 at the half but outscored the Retrievers 16-7 in the third period to go up 47-39. In the opening 2:15 of the fourth quarter, Binghamton went on an 8-3 run to go up 55-42.
UMBC fought back, scoring the next 10 points to pull within 55-52 with 5:27 left in regulation. Laura Castaldo hit back-to-back three point field goals during that stretch.
Binghamton finally got the separation it needed, going on a 7-2 spurt in a span of 1:45 to go up 65-56 with 21 second left in regulation.
Te'yjah Oliver of UMBC led all scorers with 26 points. Teammate Taylor McCarley added 13 points and dished out a game-high seven assists.
By draining three shots from beyond the three-point arc, Sina now has 131 treys for her career. She moves into sixth place all time in program history, surpassing Alicia Koppenhoefer (1994-98), who had 129 three-point field goals.
James, meanwhile, now has 108 blocked shots in her career. She is currently fourth all-time in program history. In third place, with 112 rejections, is Viive Rebane (2008-12).
As a team, Binghamton went 10-of-21 from three-point range. It entered the game leading the America East with 8.2 treys per game.
Binghamton travels to UMass Lowell for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.
