LEWISBURG, Pa. – Redshirt freshman
Kurt Wesch scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute, lifting Binghamton (5-6-3) to a 2-1 win at Bucknell (4-7-3) in a non-conference men's soccer match on Tuesday night at Emmett Field. The victory was the Bearcats' second in their past three games.
Wesch, who has now scored in two consecutive games, finished off a restart kick by redshirt senior back
Charlie Novoth from close to midfield. He now has three goals so far this season.
In the 63rd and 64th minute, the two teams traded goals in a span of just 25 seconds. Junior midfielder
Harrison Weilbacher put the Bearcats up 1-0 when he redirected a pass from freshman midfielder
Noah Luescher. Bucknell, however, came right back and got the game-tying goal from Matt Thorsheim off a deflected shot.
The Bearcats were able to hold on after Wesch's goal. Although the final shot count was 19-8 Bucknell, the shots on goal were only 5-2.
"What a terrific performance by our guys tonight," head coach
Paul Marco said. "We found a way to win. The guys showed great composure after Bucknell tied the score and got the game winner. Bucknell was very good tonight and this is a great win for our team."
In goal, redshirt freshman
Isaiah Pettis made his first career start and finished with four saves.
"Isaiah did good tonight," Marco said. "He had a great two weeks of training which led to him getting the start. He was nervous but really settled down as the match went on."
Luescher now has a team-best five assists this season while the goal by Weilbacher was his first of the year.
Binghamton returns to conference play with a 7 p.m. home match on Saturday against UMass Lowell. The Bearcats currently sit in sixth place in the America East with five points (1-1-2) while the River Hawks and Albany are tied for fourth place with six points (2-2-0).
