EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Junior guard
J.C. Show poured in a game-high 27 points and Binghamton men's basketball (1-3) took host Evansville (4-0) to the closing seconds before falling 66-61 Saturday afternoon at the Ford Center. Â
Show hit 9-of-12 shots, including 6-of-7 accuracy from beyond the arc. His final three brought the Bearcats to within four, 65-61, with nine seconds left before the host Purple Aces finished the scoring at the free throw line.Â
Binghamton had to play catch-up all game long and nearly did it against their Missouri Valley Conference foes, who have won 25 straight non-conference home games. The Bearcats' only lead came after junior center
Thomas Bruce dunked for the first points of the game. Evansville rattled off a 23-5 run to take control in the first half.Â
Show caught fire late in the half, netting eight points in a 1:19 span to bring BU to within 12 at the break, 36-24.Â
In the second half, BU trailed 51-41 with 7:53 left before a 13-4 run brought them to within one, 55-54, with 3:13 remaining. Junior guard
Everson Davis had an acrobatic driving layup and free throw for a three-point play to pull the Bearcats near-even. But Evansville answered with a three-pointer to restore breathing room.
Binghamton drew no closer than four the rest of the way, though it had a golden chance after a Bruce layup with 0:25 left. Down 62-58, BU blanketed the inbounds but with a five-second call looming, the visitors were whistled for a hard-to-see foul. Evansville made six free throws in the final 39 seconds to aid its cause.
Davis and Bruce chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively.Â
The Bearcats now head to Cancun for the final two games of the Cancun Challenge. Binghamton faces Big Sky member Montana State at 12:30 p.m. (ET) Tuesday at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. Â
