Ashkar and Monteverdi both place sixth

WILKES-BARRE, PA- Lou DePrez of the Binghamton wrestling team earned a first place finish at 184 pounds at the Wilkes Open this past Friday. The redshirt freshman went 5-0 overall on the day with three pins and a tech fall to advance to the podium.

Sophomore Audey Ashkar (125) and redshirt freshman Aidan Monteverdi (165) both earned a sixth place finish in their respective weight classes. Ashkar went 4-2 on the day with two pins while Monteverdi battled back for a 4-2 finish, with all four victories coming from bonus point wins. As a team, Binghamton finished fifth out of 41 teams with three place winners and 66.5 overall points.

"These Open tournaments are huge for the redshirts to get mat time," acting head coach Kyle Borshoff said. "Today was an exciting opportunity for these guys to go out and compete against other Universities, especially with DePrez earning his first, first place finish and seeing Ashkar and Monteverdi on the podium as well. The guys wrestled in a lot of good, quality matches and it was also good from a coaching standpoint to see how well we've developed over the past few months."

DePrez, placing in his fourth tournament so far, advances his overall record to 16-3 on the season with 10 bonus point wins, seven of which are pins. The native of Hilton, N.Y. rolled through his first two matches of the day recording pins over Buffalo's Kyle Davis (1:00) and Rider's Connor Agostino (1:28). DePrez won by tech fall 21-6 (4:58) over Blake Barrick in the quarterfinals before earning his third pin of the day over F&M's Anthony Mancini (4:00) to advance to the finals. In the championship match, DePrez earned a dominating 7-0 win by decision over returning national qualifier Alex DeCiantis (Drexel). This marks the second NCAA qualifier that DePrez has beaten this season, his first being a sudden victory semifinal win over Penn's Joe Heyob at the Bearcat Open this past November.

At the Open, Ashkar earned pins over Wyoming's Seminary Prep's Nick Bauer (2:20) and Drexel's Alex Saras (1:52). Ashkar advances his overall record to 18-5, notching six pins on the season. After dropping his first match of the day, Monteverdi came back with four bonus point wins over Clemson's Timmy Samec (F 2:51), George Mason's Daniel Mitchell (F 4:09), Delaware Valley's Snyder Anthony (MD 18-6) and American's Bryce Dempsey (MD 12-2). Monteverdi sits at 16-6 overall this season, eight of which victories come from bonus point wins.

The Bearcats return to the mats December 29-30 when they travel to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to compete in the South Beach Duals.
