Women’s Basketball Loses at UMBC 53-45

Watkins pours in game-high 22 points

BALTIMORE, Md. – Binghamton (10-12, 5-4 AE) was defeated 53-45 by UMBC (10-12, 5-4 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Wednesday night at the Retriever Athletic Center.

Junior guard Imani Watkins led the Bearcats with a game-high 22 points, marking the 11th time this season and 25th time in her career that she has reached the 20-point mark in scoring. She also added seven rebounds.

Binghamton led for most of the first half but a three-point field goal by Taylor McCarley with 25 seconds left in the second period gave the Retrievers a 27-26 advantage at the break. McCarley finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

UMBC opened up the third period on a 14-3 run to go up 41-29 with 3:37 remaining. Watkins, however, responded with eight straight points, trimming the deficit to 41-37 at the end of the period.

In the fourth period, however, the Bearcats struggled from the field, shooting just 3-for-14 over the last 10 minutes. The Retrievers, however, did not fare much better, sinking just 1-of-14 attempts. Still, UMBC went 10-of-14 from the free throw line and Binghamton was unable to get to within four points over the remainder of the game.

Laura Castaldo led UMBC with 15 points.

Junior center Alyssa James tied McCarley for the game high with nine rebounds and blocked a game-high four shots. Off the bench, sophomore forward Rebecca Carmody added six points and six rebounds.

Binghamton returns home to face UMass Lowell on Saturday at 4 p.m.
