James Turns In Historic Performance But Bearcats Lose 74-59 to Stony Brook

Junior center turns in 16-point, 10-rebound, 11-block performance

VESTAL, N.Y. – Despite a triple-double and a conference-record 11 blocks from junior center Alyssa James, Binghamton (12-15, 7-7 AE) lost 74-59 to Stony Brook (11-16, 4-10 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.

James' 11 blocks broke her own school and America East record of nine blocks, which she set at Xavier on Nov. 28, 2015. The 11 blocks represents the highest total by a NCAA Division I women's basketball player this season. Heading into the weekend, four NCAA Division I players have blocked 10 shots in a game this year. The NCAA Division I record for blocked shots in a game is 16, by Sandora Irvin of TCU against Alabama-Birmingham on Jan. 16, 2005.

James also finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds to record just the third triple double in program history and the first which included blocks. The most recent triple double in Binghamton history was a 20-point, 10-rebound, 10-assist performance by current junior guard Imani Watkins against Nyack on Dec. 15, 2015. Heading into the weekend, there have been just 25 triple doubles recorded at the NCAA Division I level this season.

"Alyssa James is a phenomenal player," head coach Linda Cimino said. "She watches more film on her opponents than most kids her age. She studies the tendencies of the players she is going to be guarding. She has the ability to block shots and also recover the ball after the block."

Watkins, meanwhile, finished with a season-high 29 points. In the process, she tied the second-highest total of her illustrious career and finished just one point shy of her career-high of 30 points (set against UMBC on Feb. 24, 2016). Watkins continues to rank second in the America East with 19.1 points per game as well as fourth all time in program history with 1,418 career points.

It was back-to-back three-point field goals by Watkins that put the Bearcats ahead 57-56 with 6:48 left in regulation. From there, however, the Seawolves outscored Binghamton 18-3 during the remainder of the game.

Stony Brook's shooting from beyond the three-point arc was the key to the game. It made 12 of its 16 treys (.750). Five of them came in the third period as the Seawolves fought back from a 38-30 deficit to take a 53-49 lead with 20 left to go.

Kori-Bayne Walker  finished with 24 points while Christa Scognamiglio posted 22 points in the winning effort. Scognamiglio was 6-for-7 from three point range while Bayne Walker added a game-high nine assists. Davion Wingate chipped in 13 points.

Freshman guard Carly Boland finished with 10 points and four rebounds. She came into the game leading the America East in three-point field goal percentage (.486) and made both of her attempts from beyond the arc.

As a team, Binghamton tied the program record with 12 blocked shots. The most recent such performance came against Misericordia back on Dec. 17, 2016.

Before the game, Binghamton honored graduating seniors Tess Wicks, Kristin Ross and Kylie Libby as part of its annual Senior Day Ceremony.

Binghamton closes out its regular-season home schedule against Hartford on Thursday at 7 p.m.

NOTES: The other triple-double in Binghamton program history came when Marlo Foley finished with 14 points, 10 assists and 10 steals against Elmira College back on Jan. 31, 1992. Binghamton competed at the NCAA Division III level that season and was then known as the Colonials … James, who is the reigning America East Defensive Player of the Year, is now averaging a conference-best 2.3 blocks per game. She remains in third place all-time in Binghamton program history with 153 career rejections.
