CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Senior infielder
Crysti Eichner and freshman catcher
Sara Herskowitz each drilled a two-run home run, leading Binghamton (2-4) to a 6-3 win over Oklahoma State (5-5) in the final day of the Michelle Smith Pediatric Cancer Softball Tournament. The Cowgirls entered the weekend receiving votes in the NFCA Top 25 Poll.
The last time the Bearcats defeated a team receiving votes in the NFCA Top 25 poll was when they defeated South Florida 1-0 on Feb. 14, 2014. In addition, the win marks Binghamton's first-ever triumph against a squad from the Big 12 Conference.
Herskowitz's homer, which was the first of her career, came in the bottom of the second inning and broke open a scorleess tie. Oklahoma State tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning but Eichner answered with her two-run blast in the bottom of the frame to make it 4-2.
Nursing a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bearcats got a pair of insurance runs. Eichner had a RBI double and later scored on a single by senior outfielder
Bridget Hunt.
Freshman pitcher
Rayn Gibson went the distance to improve to 1-2. The loss was tagged to Whitney Whitehorn, whose record fell to 0-2.
"It was a true team effort," head coach Michelle Johnston said. "Rayn threw a great game and we played solid defense behind her. Our offense did a great job coming out and putting runs on the board early. We continue to have good, quality at-bats throughout the entire game."
Eichner and Hunt both finished the game with a pair of hits.
During the six games in Clearwater this week, Eichner drove in a team-high six runs. Hunt, meanwhile, batted a team-best .385, going 5-for-13 in the process.Â
In addition to Oklahoma State, the Bearcats faced a pair of nationally-ranked opponents -- No. 14 James Madison and No. 20 South Florida -- during the Michelle Smith Pediartric Cancer Tournament.Â
Binghamton returns to action at the Southern Utah Tournament March 3-5.Â
NOTES: Binghamton's last win over a team from a major conference was a 9-3 victory at Maryland on March 20, 2016. The Terps play in the Big Ten Conference.Â
